Towards COP30 in Brazil: Expanding the Climate Movement and Citizen Participation

Short abstract of speech

In 2023, Asia faced a staggering 79 disasters linked to hydro-meteorological hazards, as reported by the Emergency Events Database. Over 80% of these were attributed to floods and storms, resulting in a tragic toll of over 2,000 fatalities and affecting nine million individuals directly, as noted by the WMO. 350.org Asia has been actively championing campaigns urging both public and private sectors to curtail fossil fuel expansion. Presently, we are spearheading a solutions-oriented campaign aimed at shaping policies and National Determined Contributions (NDCs) to align with a comprehensive two-year plan leading up to COP30 in Brazil. This endeavor emphasizes the critical need for enhanced natural resource management solutions, including water resources.

Lead water detection - the begin and continue.

Short abstract of speech

To Find the Lead water, we have developed a safe and cost-effective portable device to detect the heavy metal lead. We generated the genetically-encoded lead biosensors, and used optical setup and smartphone.

Initially, we focused on the water quality of aged residences over 30 years old, aiming to inform residents about the condition of their water and the urgency of replacing lead-containing pipelines.

Regarding agricultural and fishery water testing, the main targets were irrigation water, groundwater, and aquaculture water, aiming to prevent farmers and fishermen from using contaminated water sources for irrigation and aquaculture, thus ensuring the quality of agricultural and fishery products.

Simultaneously, the test results are also communicated along with hygiene education on preventing lead exposure, aiming to steer residents away from contaminated water sources and keep agricultural and fishery products away from harmful lead environments to safeguard public health.

Recent efforts focus on data analysis and discussion to enhance precision.
